About Elaine Schulstad
Biography – Elaine Ferris Schulstad
I was born in Minnesota and grew up in Atlanta, Ga . In High School I can remember sketching and drawing horses on my school notebooks .
At age 17, I attended the University of Georgia and leaned toward art. My first year in college I included drawing and design.
The years after that,I also studied to be a Dental Hygienist.
We then moved to Columbus, Ga. where I went to Columbus College as I knew that I wanted to study art. . Alternatively, I took art courses at night from a local acrylic artist.
Later living in NY for 3 years. I was inspired to paint again after seeing the beauty of the valleys with old barns and mountains and rushing creeks .Living near Woodstock, an artsey community, I took up painting with art loving friends. The mountains there were calling me to paint .
In 1989 we moved to Hong Kong where I learned Market Cantonese, oil painting, stained glass work, art of buying oriental rugs, oriental pottery, and furniture. I learned the difference between a Persian rug and Pakistan rug. A year later we moved to Singapore where I admired the artistic skills of artists who perfected the hand carved teakwood and rosewood furniture.
In 1992 we moved back to Raleigh, where I became a Realtor.
Over the years I studied the masters, studied books by John Carlson, Charles Hawthorn, Kevin McPherson, and Edgar Payne. I’ve taken classes online, and from various workshops under artists including Robert Burridge, Christine McClelland, Judy Crane, Ed Hardy, Nichole Kennedy, Lori Putnam, Larry Dean and others. I taught art for summer camp for kids last year, and acrylic painting to adults. I was a member of Visual Art Exchange and currently am member of the Fine Arts League of Cary, NC. and Oil Painters of America. I show and sell my work on commissions and at various shows and festivals.
I really love landscapes with old barns and animals, coastal scenes, rivers and lakes, old boats, and marinas with views that touch the heart. I sell my paintings in Raleigh, NC. I love to paint!
